Espinal was the hero in this one with his two-run double in the eighth inning off Phil Maton. That gave the Reds their first and only lead of the day as they salvaged the final game of this series. Cincinnati’s lineup has been ravaged by injuries and Espinal could be a sneaky source of volume in deep leagues for the next few weeks.

Alexis Díaz struck out two in a clean inning of work against the Mets on Sunday to earn the save.

Díaz has done well to hold the closer role in Cincinnati’s beleaguered bullpen despite a forgettable season. He’d blown two of his last three save opportunities before this one and is still hard to trust with his 4.38 ERA.

Julian Aguiar shut the Mets out with two walks and two strikeouts through 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Mets on Sunday.

Aguiar and his sinker-slider combo kept the Mets at bay in this one. He mostly stayed out of the heart of the plate and frustrated most of the right-handed batters with a bevy of sinkers right on their hands. The Mets could barely sustain a rally in what turned out to be a solid yet unspectacular start from the young righty. He’s scheduled to face the Cardinals on the road next time out if he gets another turn in the Reds’ rotation.

Jonathan India left Sunday’s game against the Mets with elbow discomfort.

India went 0-for-3 before leaving the contest. The infielder will likely be examined to determine the severity of the injury. Amed Rosario replaced India in the lineup.

CIN Relief Pitcher #50

Reds placed LHP Sam Moll on the 15-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement.

There’s a good chance Moll’s season is over, but he’ll miss at least the next two weeks with the designation. The left-hander has been one of their better relief options this year with a 3.35 ERA and 38/14 K/BB over 37 2/3 innings in 48 appearances.

Reds recalled RHP Casey Legumina from Triple-A Louisville.

Legumina has been a constant traveler between Louisville and Cincinnati, and this time he gets the call up to replace Sam Moll with Moll on the 15-day injured list.

TJ Friedl (chest) is not in the lineup for Sunday’s finale against the Mets.

Friedl left Saturday’s game with shortness of breath and was taken to the hospital, but he check out well. He’ll still miss Sunday’s game with Will Benson getting the start in Friedl’s place.

Jakob Junis tossed five scoreless innings with five strikeouts in a no-decision against the Mets on Saturday.

Junis drew the start against the Mets on Saturday and was impressive on the mound, holding New York scoreless across five innings. He scattered one hit and one walk while striking out five batters. Junis would be saddled with a no-decision after the Reds were held scoreless. The 31-year-old right-hander ends the day with a 2.82 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and a 39/7 K/BB ratio across 51 innings. Another start in the rotation could come Thursday against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Hunter Greene

CIN Starting Pitcher #21

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Hunter Greene (elbow) could return either September 20 or September 21 against the Pirates.

Reds manager David Bell told reporters that Greene will throw live batting practice Tuesday against St. Louis, and then do a two-inning simulation five days later against Minnesota. “And the next step would be to pitch in one of our games,” Bell said. “He’s not going to be built up to go seven innings. But if those two steps go well, the next one will be in our game.” Greene has not pitched since August 13 and will offer some risk with the reward if/when that occurs, but obviously it’s nice to see one of the more talented arms getting healthy.

Elly De La Cruz went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run on Friday against the Mets.

The Reds managed four runs on four hits in this game thanks to two-run homers from both De La Cruz and TJ Friedl. The former crushed his an estimated 413 feet at 111.1 MPH in an impressive display of power. That power has dried up a good bit of late though as this was De La Cruz’s first homer in 16 games and second overall since the beginning of August.
