  • DET Right Fielder #30
Carpenter singled home a run in the third and doubled in another in the eighth. It’s a shame the 27-year-old missed so much time — not that any injury is good — as you can’t help but wonder what the numbers would look like here. When healthy, he’s slashed an outstanding .284/.347/.578 with 47 RBI.
  • DET Shortstop #27
A monster game for Sweeney, one that reminded of why he was a first-round pick by the Yankees back in 2021. He took J.T. Ginn deep in the third for his third homer of the season, while the steal was his second. Sweeney has hit .236/.276/.436 so there’s been just as much bad as good in his 19 games — if not more — but Sunday was at least something that should make fantasy managers raise their respective eyebrows.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #36
Madden came in after Beau Brieske threw a scoreless inning as the “starter.” Madden certainly looked like a starter in this game, giving up just the one run on five hits with one walk and showing off some swing-and-miss stuff. Madden had ugly numbers in the minors, but he has been strong since being promoted by Detroit with a 2.57 ERA and 10/4 K/BB over four appearances. He’ll likely work again against the Orioles over the weekend.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #48
Hurter, who came in with two outs in the first, got the win despite opposing starter Brady Basso pitching six scoreless innings. Fortunately for Hurter, the Tigers scored twice in the top of the seventh, putting him in line for the win even though he was done for the day. Hurter has won each of his last four appearances, which includes one start and three bulk outings. His stuff is average at best, but he’s getting grounders and avoiding walks. It’s led to a 3.00 ERA through 33 innings. He’ll probably face the Orioles next, unless maybe the Tigers decide to push back Tarik Skubal and let Hurter face the Rockies in Detroit instead. That’d make him much more viable in fantasy leagues.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #68
Foley came in with one out in the ninth and retired two of the three batters he faced. The Tigers have, in recent months, liked mixing and matching late in games. Still, they’ve just never come up with a better option than Foley, and even though Foley’s stuff isn’t what it was last year, he’s dragged his ERA back under 3.00 of late. The save today was his sixth since Aug. 15. He went the previous five weeks without one.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #78
It’s official. Jobe arrives on the doorstep of the majors after recording eight strikeouts and allowing one run over seven innings on Thursday in his final outing for Double-A Erie. The hard-throwing 22-year-old righty, who was selected third overall in the 2021 MLB Draft, is universally-regarded as one of the top handful of pitching prospects in the game and offers massive strikeout potential. He’s going to make an instant impact for fantasy managers once he arrives. He’ll remain in Triple-A Toledo for now, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see him making noise for Detroit in the near future, possibly even down the home stretch.
  • DET Relief Pitcher #75
Hanifee will take the ball as Detroit’s opener before giving way to rookie southpaw Brant Hurter, who has posted a solid 3.25 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 26/3 K/BB ratio across 27 2/3 innings (six appearances, one start) so far, for a bulk relief appearance. There’s definitely some streaming appeal here with Hurter, especially for fantasy managers in extremely deep leagues.
  • DET Right Fielder #30
Carpenter will take a seat for Saturday afternoon’s matinee with lefty-masher Matt Vierling getting the nod to face Oakland rookie southpaw Brady Basso. The 27-year-old slugger is batting .279 (19-for-68) with six homers in 20 games since returning from the injured list back on August 13.
  • DET Center Fielder #31
Greene had a pair of run-scoring singles; one of them in the fifth and another in the 12th. The 23-year-old singled three times while also adding a double to improve his average to .263 and his OPS to .832. Greene sometimes feels like a player that doesn’t get nearly enough credit for how impressive he’s been at this young stage of his career, but fantasy managers who roster the outfielder are well aware of what he’s capable of.
  • DET Starting Pitcher #29
Skubal didn’t issue a walk, but he gave up nine hits against the Oakland lineup. He fired four shutout innings before giving up an RBI triple to Jacob Wilson in the fifth, and another run scored in the sixth on a single by former Tiger Daz Cameron. Skubal wasn’t at his best, but he still possesses an outstanding 2.53 ERA and 208/33 K/BB over 28 starts across 174 innings. He’s obviously a must-start against the Rockies at home Thursday.
