Bournemouth got its last-gasp winner to stand as struggling Everton coughed up a late two-goal lead and fell 3-2 to the Cherries at Goodison Park on Saturday.
Everton led 2-0 in the 87th minute on goals from Michael Keane and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and all looked set for a relief-giving win in front of an ornery home crowd.
But Antoine Semenyo scored and then Luis Sinisterra set up a Lewis Cook goal before scoring in the sixth minute of stoppage time to deliver the Cherries three points one week after they were controversially denied an equalizer versus Newcastle United.
After being hammered 3-0 at home against Brighton and 4-0 away at Tottenham to open the season, the Toffees found a way to score twice and make it worse. The Toffees got a couple of deadline day transfers over the line after Sean Dyche’s open frustration with the financial limitations at the club. There have been ugly scenes with fans venting their anger at players publicly and that sadly looks unlikely to improve this week.
Bournemouth are yet to lose and could easily be 2-1-0 had Dango Ouattara’s would-be winner stood against the Magpies.
Inexplicable lack of late intensity dooms Everton
Full credit to Andoni Iraola’s Bournemouth, who look very good and kept fighting for goals despite clearly being off their best. Iraola would later call it their worst performance of the season and say that Everton deserved to win the game.
And that’s true! So you’d think that a Sean Dyche-coached club that has been clobbered early this season and under serious heat from the fans would not let their foot off the gas or at least solidly keep their eyes out the windshield.
Everton chose neither. There were passengers looking for drivers all over the pitch on Bournemouth’s goals, and the loss just feels like sabotaging the early part of the season. Late leads will be haunted as will multi-goal leads. And for it to happen at home? Woof.

James Tarkowski should be fit to return for Everton, which would be a big boost. Dyche is urging calm but Everton’s fans are wary of yet another relegation scrap, in what is their final season at Goodison Park. The main issue in their home defeat against Brighton was that they squandered good chances at key moments in the game and were then punished at the other end. That happened a lot last season too.
