Tottenham 4-0 Everton: Spurs cruise past sloppy Toffees

With club-record signing Dominic Solanke out with an ankle injury he suffered in his debut, Son Heung-min picked up the goal-scoring load with a goal in each half.

Yves Bissouma opened the scoring (and his Tottenham account) with a thunderbolt from the edge of the penalty area in the 14th minute, and Son made it 2-0 when Jordan Pickford handed him the ball inside the box 11 minutes later. Spurs were comfortable, but not content at 2-0. Cristian Romero headed home James Maddison’s corner kick in the 71st minute as Tottenham refused to relent, which also led to goal no. 4, from Son, to complete the scoring just six minutes later.

Spurs learning to finish games when they dominate them

Ange Postecoglou’s side didn’t make the same mistake twice after battering Leicester for 45 minutes on opening day, when they only put away one of their many chances and Jamie Vardy eventually made them pay for it. Saturday was an exercise in ruthless, clinical finishing from Tottenham, as they built an early (two-goal) lead in the first half and only proceeded to build on it in the second. Spurs struck the right balance between controlling the game with loads of possession (71 percent for the game) and taking the right amount risk as they continue to seek more goals (two goals on just four shots in the second half, from 66 percent of possession).

Tottenham team news, focus

New signing Dominic Solanke was tidy and solid with his 35 touches over 90 minutes, but will have expected more from his three shots than no goals. Heung-min Son and James Maddison were much busier with the ball, and Maddison assisted Pedro Porro’s goal and certainly wants to charge up the Premier League assist board.

OUT: Rodrigo Bentancur (head) | QUESTIONABLE: Fraser Forser (ankle), Pedro Porro (ankle)

Everton team news, focus

Saturday was an off day for most of the Everton team, and pressure continues to weigh on Dominic Calvert-Lewin. His 0.01 xG+xA against Brighton — on just 20 touches — was so poor, and he needs to be more like the guy who scored four goals in his last seven games last season than the guy who has one goal every five or so matches since his 16-goal Premier League campaign in 2020-21.

OUT: Jarrad Branthwaite (groin), Nathan Patterson (thigh), Youssef Chermiti (ankle), Dele Alli (groin), James Garner (calf), Seamus Coleman (calf), Ashley Young (suspended)| QUESTIONABLE: James Tarkowski (other)

Tottenham vs Everton prediction

Jordan Pickford, get ready to be busy. Spurs will come firing forward and Sean Dyche’s men will have to do well to avoid another multi-goal loss, especially at an expectant Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. We fear they won’t. Tottenham 2-0 Everton.
