Pirates sent OF Billy McKinney outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

McKinney was designated for assignment by the Pirates on Friday. The outfielder didn’t receive a claim on the waiver wire, so he sticks with the Pittsburgh organization.

PIT Starting Pitcher #37

Jared Jones threw seven innings of two-run ball and struck out nine as the Pirates topped the Nationals 7-3 on Sunday.

CJ Abrams led off the top of the first with a homer today, but it wasn’t a sign of things to come. Jones allowed just three more hits and walked none in one of his best showings since the beginning of the year. He touched 99.9 mph and average 98.0 mph with his fastball while producing 15 missed swings and a 39% CSW. Jones will likely make his next start against the Royals on six days’ rest.
Billy Cook

Billy Cook went 2-for-4 with a two-run double against the Nationals in his major league debut Sunday.

He also made a fantastic running catch down the first base line on a foul ball. Cook, acquired from the Orioles at the trade deadline, figures to mostly play against lefties for the Pirates.

Pirates sent RHP Domingo Germán outright to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Germán went unclaimed after being designated for assignment Thursday. He’ll be org depth for the rest of 2024 and likely looking for a new home in 2025.

Pirates placed C Henry Davis on the 10-day injured list with left hand inflammation.

As expected, Davis will head to the injured list with Billy Cook added to the active roster to take Davis’s place. There’s no timetable for when Davis will be ready to return, but with only three weeks left in the season there’s a chance the 24-year-old won’t return again until 2025.

Pirates selected the contract of INF/OF Billy Cook from Triple-A Indianapolis.

A 10th round pick in 2021 by Baltimore, Cook will get a chance to make his MLB debut with Pittsburgh. The 25-year-old has posted an .843 OPS in the minors this year with 17 homers and 25 stolen bases. Those are strong numbers, but there are likely better options on the waiver wire than Cook at this stage.

Danny Demilio of PGH reports that the Pirates will place Henry Davis on the 10-day injured list.

That explains why Davis wasn’t in the lineup for either game of a doubleheader Saturday against the Nationals. No word yet on what the injury is, but the former first-overall pick will be out for at least 10 days, and there’s a chance his 2024 season is over.
Aroldis Chapman

Aroldis Chapman gave up four runs while blowing a save and taking a loss to the Nationals on Saturday over just 2/3 of an inning in the second game of a doubleheader.

Chapman came in to finish a game the Pirates were leading 6-4, but he wasn’t able to get the job done. He did strike out two, but that’s of little solace for fantasy managers — and of course the Pirates — as he imploded to allow four runs before being pulled. Chapman has had some success in 2024, but he’s a shell of the pitcher he was a few years ago. That’s how time works, for most.
Mitch Keller

PIT Starting Pitcher #23

Mitch Keller gave up two runs in six strong innings but picked up a no-decision against the Nationals on Saturday in game two of a doubleheader.

Keller did give up seven hits, but he struck out eight without issuing a walk, and he also only gave up one extra-base hit. The right-hander bounced back from a mediocre outing against the Guardians on Saturday to lower his ERA to 3.85 and improve his K/BB to 153/42 over 163 2/3 innings. He’s scheduled to make one of his final starts of 2024 against the Royals on Saturday.

Henry Davis was excluded from the Pirates lineup for both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against the Nationals.

Even though the Pirates are facing lefties in both games, they still declined to find any room for Davis. There just doesn’t seem to be much of a plan for the first overall pick in the 2021 draft right now. It’s even hard to see how he’ll fit in next year, what with Joey Bart looking quite good and Endy Rodriguez on the way back from Tommy John. He hasn’t played a game anywhere except catcher or DH this season.
