Ha-Seong Kim had difficulties with his injured shoulder while trying to make throws across the diamond Saturday, making a quick return to the Padres less likely.

Kim has been out since Aug. 19 with shoulder inflammation. There was some hope he might return this week, but it doesn’t look like that will happen. The Padres have been going with Mason McCoy at shortstop, but they might soon bite the bullet to move Xander Bogaerts back to his old spot, opening up more playing time for David Peralta and Donovan Solano.

SD Starting Pitcher #44

Joe Musgrove yielded six runs in 4 1/3 innings Sunday in a loss to the Giants.

That’s as many earned runs as he had allowed in his last seven starts combined. Musgrove fanned seven, but he gave up three homers after not allowing any in five starts since coming off the IL last month. He’ll have a chance to get revenge next week when he faces the Giants in San Francisco.

Xander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer Sunday in the loss to the Giants.

Bogaerts finished the game at shortstop today and Mason McCoy was lifted for a pinch-hitter. It sounds like he might get his first start at the position sometime soon, as the Padres need the extra offense.

Jackson Merrill is hitting seventh and playing center field against the Giants on Sunday.

Merrill was able to pinch hit for the Padres during Saturday’s loss, so it’s not a surprise that the star rookie is able to get back into the lineup against the Giants on Sunday. The 21-year-old will be facing Spencer Bivens and the San Francisco bullpen in the series finale.

Jackson Merrill (knee) went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter during Saturday’s loss to the Giants.

The bad news is that Merrill was unable to get the hit after pinch-hitting for Tyler Wade. The good news is that he was able to play, and that bodes well for him either returning to the lineup Sunday against the Giants or early in the week; possibly Tuesday against the Mariners in Seattle.

Luis Arraez went 3-for-5 and drove in run in a loss to the Giants on Saturday.

Arraez singled for all three knocks. One of those hits drove in a run off Logan Webb to make it a 4-3 game, but the Padres would get no closer. The .313 average for Arraez is a bit lower than his .322 career mark, but there aren’t any batters more likely to help in the average category than Arraez across the sport.

Dylan Cease was charged for four runs in six innings while picking up a loss to the Giants on Saturday.

Cease gave up a three-run homer to Grant McCray, and McCray also drove in a run — without getting an RBI — on a double play. Outside of that it was a fine start for Cease, but damage done. The right-hander has been a bit shaky as of late, as he posted a 4.43 ERA in the month of August and he’s given up seven runs thus far in his 12 innings in September. He’ll take on the Giants again over next weekend.

Jackson Merrill told reporters after Saturday’s game that he’s “optimistic” he can play Sunday against the Giants after leaving Friday with a knee contusion.

Merrill is not in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Giants, but the star rookie doesn’t have a long-term injury. The bad news is it’s one more game without the 21-year-old available for fantasy managers, but it seems likely he’ll be back early next week even if he isn’t able to play Sunday against San Francisco.

Fernando Tatis Jr. is out of the Padres lineup for Saturday’s game against the Giants.

This is probably a scheduled day off for Tatis, who had played four games in a row since returning from his stress reaction. It doesn’t come as a great time, though, as Jackson Merrill is out of the lineup after getting hurt last night. The Padres have Tyler Wade in center and David Peralta in right.

Jackson Merrill is day-to-day after leaving Friday’s game with a knee contusion.

The positive news here is that X-rays came back negative for any fractures after Merrill fouled a ball off his leg in the game in the contest against the Giants and was replaced by Tyler Wade in center. He’s presumably day-to-day for the moment. However, if this turns into something more significant, the Padres could bring up Tirso Ornelas to help out in the outfield.
